The tradition of the sak yant

A “Sak Yant” is a traditional Thai tattoo, performed by either a Buddhist Monk or an Ajarn - a non-fractioning monk - and is chosen through a process where the monks ask questions and decide the the main traits and characteristics of a person, to then decide which animal or script will match best, the character of the person.

It is considered a sacred ritualistic tattoo, rather than a commercial one, and follows specific rules, for the receiver, to make sure its magic stays alive.

Often originally performed in temples, it has many variations of scripts, including the Gao Yord (Nine Peaks), offering things like protection and good luck. Hah Taew (Five Lines), that represent different blessings like charisma or fortune, and the animal Sak Yant, as well as others with zodiac and floral symbols. All giving specific charms and blessings for the wearer.
